What is plus disease in ROP?
Plus disease describes the most severe vascular changes of dilation and tortuosity and is associated with severe ROP and visual morbidity if left untreated. The diagnosis of plus disease is historically a dichotomous decision based on subjective comparison to reference images.
What is ROP screening?
ROP screening is the eye examination by an ophthalmologist (or eye specialist) to look for any signs of ROP. All babies weighing less than 1501 grams at birth or born more than 8 weeks early will need at least one eye screening examination.
Who needs ROP screening?
Initial screening should be performed at 31 weeks’ postmenstrual age in infants with gestational ages of 26 6/7 weeks or less at birth, and at four weeks’ chronological age in infants with gestational ages of 27 weeks or more at birth by an ophthalmologist skilled in the detection of ROP.
What is stage1 ROP?
Stage 1 is the mildest form of ROP. Babies at this stage or stage 2 often don’t need any treatment and will have normal vision. Babies with stage 3 have more blood vessels that are abnormal. These may be large or twisted, which means the retina could start to come loose.

- Stage II — Moderately abnormal blood vessel growth.
- Stage III — Severely abnormal blood vessel growth.
- Stage IV — Partially detached retina.
- Stage V — Completely detached retina and the end stage of the disease.
What is threshold ROP?
Threshold ROP was defined as a condition with 50% risk of retinal detachment if left untreated. This includes ROP of more than 5 contiguous or 8 cumulative clock hours of stage 3 plus ROP in zone 1 or zone 2. All eyes with threshold disease were recommended to be treated.
How is ROP test done?
This test is done inside the neonatal unit or hospital, during a visit by the retina specialist or paediatric ophthalmologist. The pupils of the eye are dilated using drops and the retina is examined with an indirect ophthalmoscope for signs of ROP.
Can babies with ROP see?
About 14,000 to 16,000 babies born in the United States each year have ROP. Most babies with ROP have a mild case and don’t need treatment. But babies with severe ROP can have vision problems or blindness. About 400 to 600 babies each year become legally blind from ROP.
Who is at risk for ROP?
Premature babies are the number-one risk group for retinopathy of prematurity. In general, the smaller and more premature the infant, the more likely he or she is to develop ROP, and the more likely to need treatment.
