vtec is allowing more air and gas to enter into the combustion chamber, creating a bigger bang. You hear this. Usually, the “noise” is slightly higher pitched (when in vtec), if you have a raspy exhaust, it is only going to sound raspier.

Why does VTEC sound so good?
As the engine begins to spin more quickly, the center lobe takes over and the valves open sooner and closer later, which results in a sudden burst of speed and better performance. This change also causes the engine to have a sudden change in pitch — that’s “VTEC kicking in.”
