What is the latest census to be released?
Because of a 72-year restriction on access to the Census, the most recent year available is 1940. The 1950 Census will be released in 2022. The National Archives has the census schedules on microfilm available from 1790 to 1940, and most have now been digitized by our digitization partners.
Is there a 5 year census?
The 5-year estimates from the ACS are “period” estimates that represent data collected over a period of time. The 5-year estimates are available for all geographies down to the block group level. In total, there are 87 different summary levels available with over 578,000 geographic areas.

Only Statistics Canada employees who have taken the oath of secrecy have access to census questionnaires. The act stipulates that a person who refuses to complete a census questionnaire can be fined up to $500. The court may also require the completion of the census questionnaire.
