What is a cisco fish in Michigan?
The cisco (aka lake herring, Coregonus artedi) was one of the most abundant fish in Lake Michigan before unregulated commercial fishing, invasive species, and habitat degradation took their toll. By the mid-1960s, cisco were nearly wiped out. Most of their deepwater cousins also disappeared from the lake.

In my early years, I grew up fishing Lake Simcoe in southern Ontario, and in the 1960s and 70s, the herring population in the lake was remarkable. I say, wonderful, because herring are great fun to catch if you use the proper tackle and delicious to eat if you handle and cook them properly.
